About Woodland Discovery
Our Philosophy
01 โ Avoid โNature Deficit Disorderโ
In the book, โLast Child in the Woods,โ Richard Louv coined the phrase โโNature Deficit Disorderโ for this generation of children who are disconnected from the natural world. Read moreโฆ
02 โ Provide Time for Exploration
Based on this research, Woodland Discovery noted several ways to๏ปฟ improve childrenโs programs. The most notable is to increase time for gross motor activities and exploration in a nature-rich environment. Read moreโฆ
03 โ Encourage Independence
As adults, we are often inclined to tell children when, what, and how to do everything. If children do not practice using some thought processes, how will they ever learn to think without us? Read moreโฆ

What We Offer
-
Designed to supplement or replace a traditional Preschool Program, you may sign up for 1 to 5 days per week of Forest Preschool or an older Forest Adventure program. This concept is based on the Forest Schools of Scandinavia and Europe and provide learning opportunities and physical activity beyond traditional offerings.
-
We offer a full range of Homeschool opportunities for children ages 5-12 each afternoon. Each teacher designs a program based on a specific theme, but utilizing the outdoors for learning and free-play in the woods. Each class is designed for the entire year and is held on a consistent day of the week. Each school year will have unique offerings, but generally include literacy based classes, outdoor skills, art, and science.
-
This class from 3:30-6 mirrors the topic of the homeschool classes and includes outdoor time for those in traditional school settings.
-
Recognizing that children in a formal school setting often do not have the flexibility to spend blocks of time outdoors, we often offer 1 day programs for days that correspond with days-off in local school calendars. These explores are often theme-related to maximize the discoveries of the season or may just join in the regular forest school model. We often offer these as a "School Day Out" or "Workshop" - but since all schools are on different calendars, it never hurts to email and ask if your child can join for a day.
-
Several camp themes are offered concurrently to accommodate families with children of different ages and interests. Most camps are either morning or afternoon, but supervised lunch period is available for a free for those who opt to sign up for two sessions to provide all day activities.
-
We can plan and execute a Nature themed birthday party for your child. Prices start at $150 for up to 10 children for one hour of exploring and activities. Additional fees for additional children. Take-aways and refreshments are usually provided by parents, but we can negotiate for what fits your preferences best.
-
Our passion for outdoor learning enables us to share ideas with parents and educators on how children learn, and how to incorporate hands-on nature experiences into every day. We can offer a look at our apiary, or consult on "greening" up your playground spaces.
Occasionally we may co-sponsor a workshop with another organization.
-
A class visit to our wonderful location at Harris Lake is designed to support your curriculum studies in woodlands, wetlands, gardens, meadows, ponds, creeks, flora and tree identification, bugs, birds, etc.
-
We hope that no child is ever unable to attend programs because of cost. Woodland Discovery seeks to build a scholarship fund to assist with any family needs. If cost is a limitation, or if you are able to contribute, please contact us. Item description
